How We Research
Every guide on Warm & Wired starts with one question: will this product work in your home? For a fireplace insert, that means the opening size, the heat you need, and whether the installation suits your space.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the room and the job
A wall-mounted fireplace may not suit a room without the right wall space. A space heater for occasional use is not the same choice as a humidifier for a bedroom or a heated blanket for a bed.
We check dimensions, room size, heat output, placement, power needs and the intended use. For mantels, TV mounts, screens and guards, we look at fit, clearance and compatibility with the fireplace and nearby furniture.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the details makers list: insert dimensions, heat settings, controls, flame options, installation requirements, materials, capacity and what comes in the box.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists and point out when a listed specification is missing.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like inserts that are hard to fit, heaters that make more noise than expected, controls that fail, or furniture that arrives damaged.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A mantel that works well with a particular insert may score higher in a guide about fireplace furniture than in a guide about heating a large room.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
Installation and electrical requirements vary by product and home. Follow the maker's instructions and consult a qualified professional when a project involves wiring, clearances or converting an existing fireplace.
